By the way, everyone looked amazing at Windycon! I was totally blown away by all your great costumes. Next time I won't be so shy and I'll take more pictures!

Zoo Photo Safari

We were asked by a representative of the Woodland Park Zoo, here in Seattle to do a photo shoot in their Rainforest exhibit to promote a class they are doing in January. The shoot was quite fun. The resulting poster from our photo safari at Woodland Park Zoo.

Defining 'Steamy'.

  • Nov. 25th, 2009 at 10:08 PM
I've just recently landed myself in steampunk-verse, though I have come across some steampunk elements in my BJD and lolita circles earlier. Before I start seeking and hoarding clothes and items and gutting old watches for parts XD, I would like to ask some questions. Hope you folks can help me out!

Questions, questions... )

Much thanks in advance! If someone has already asked similar questions that have been answered, please direct me to those, too.

Guest Blog: Gloria Weber on Character Goals

  • Nov. 25th, 2009 at 7:29 AM
Today's entry is an early turkey day surprise--my blog is being invaded by Gloria Weber, author of Gaslight Demons. Don't worry, though, this is a planned invasion, so my blog is only temporarily capitulating to the awesomeness that is Gloria. After today, you'll be trapped with me again.

If you're not ready to surrender with me now, then too bad because here we go!

Bwahahahaha!

********************************************************************************

Good day everyone, this is not Michelle. I, Gloria Weber, author of Gaslight Demons, published by Morbidgames Publishing, have taken control of this blog as part of my Gaslight Demons Virtual Book Tour. In other words, I’m a mere guest blogger, who is humbly thankful for being allowed this opportunity.

I’m here to share some of my thoughts on writing. And the thought of the day is character goals. Character goals can manifest in a number of ways. For the sake of not droning on for hours, I’ll cover two forms of character goals that appear in my novel: situational goals and self decided goals.

Self decided goals, as I call them, are goals the character has set up for herself. I view this like a fork in the road of a character’s life path. If they had gone left, choosing not to make this a goal and following it through, things could have been different. The man who picks revenge over forgiveness or the child who sees a figure skater and devotes time to becoming one are examples of this.

In Gaslight Demons, my main character Sophia Nogard decides to become an Occult Officer. Though she could have moved on with her life, she chose to join up for the express goal of getting her father’s remains back. Had she chosen to become a Water Works Wizard it wouldn’t have been the same story, nor would she have developed the other personal goals, such as “not being like the rest of them.”

The other type of goals, situational character goals, are generally goals that are set and have to met due to what is going on around the character. These can be long term or just short term goals. Often these are used in action or horror genres. A short-term goal could be as simple as making it through the woods, where the serial killer is hiding, because at the other end there’s a bus station. Choices they make along the way could reveal to the character aspects of her personality she never knew about, like being willing to sacrifice a friend for her own safety.

Sophia ends up developing a long-term goal during the course of my novel. Her goal is to find the magical, serial murderer in order to protect her friends. In the process of fulfilling this goal she is forced to examine herself and take risks that she might not have otherwise taken.

And in the end it has to be a goal rather than a choice. By making it a goal, it makes it that more important and allows more of the character to be revealed. The more the character learns about herself the more she grows.

If you would like to find out if Sophia ever gets her father’s remains back, what risks she has to take while pursuing her long-term goal, or what else happens in my book, please visit my site for places to buy Gaslight Demons, published by Morbidgames Publishing, written by me, Gloria Weber: http://gloriaweber.wordpress.com/ There you will also find my previous virtual book tour stops and dates for more to come.

Hello World

Hi All,

I'm a long time lurker who finally up and joined. I'd like to share my (incredibly cheap and quick) iPod case modification. I tried to go for the handmade look by crinkling the foil as I pressed it down. I think that may have been a mistake. Once the glues dry I'll put it all together and post a followup pic if people are interested. Any comments are welcome!

Acrylic iPod Case $15
Brass Foil Tape $5

Steam Bugs and faces

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 7:49 PM
been a while since I posted anything steampunk inspired so I thought I would post a few of my new pieces. The first four are Steampunk bugs that I made out of paperclay. On the back I added a pin back so that they can be worn on a shirt or jacket but I also left the antenna with loops at the end so that jump rings could be added to the end and they could be worn as pendants. Each one is made by pressing watch parts into the clay then latter painting them, some parts of the bugs are sealed in a glossy finish and some are in a matte finish.

Cheap Accessory on ebaz

  • Nov. 25th, 2009 at 12:06 AM
I think that these are pretty nice looking for a utility pouch for your belt, and the design, along with the old-style latches lands this firmly within the steamy category. The pouch is actually for a pack of smokes and a cellphone, but I could see these being use for all sorts of things, including my blackberry (which is a pain in the ass to carry around in costume).

Help!

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 7:29 PM
Hi Everyone,

I am looking for an affordable (under $200) Steampunk styled suitjacket for my boyfriend that I can get delivered to me (in Detroit) by X-Mas. He is really interested in the US "Wild West" side of the style, and is a tall and of larger build. I would need a generous 1X or a 2X. Can you give me suggestions of reputable, good quality ateliers that I should check out? I don't have time to order something and have it not work out! Thanks in advance!

Scandinavian?

  • Nov. 25th, 2009 at 1:05 AM
Hello my loves!

Long time, no post, but now I come to you in my hour of need: for my costume class at school, we are doing "An Enemy of the People" which takes place in Victorian Norway. I have been looking, but there does not seem to be much information on the internet about the costumes of the era... does anyone have any links or info? I would really appreciate it!

My previous project was designing a circus, and of course mine was Steampunk themed! I'll post the pictures just as soon as I can get them scanned.

Thanks, all!

Multi-disciplined Graduate School

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 8:23 PM
Ever since doing an archaeology dig in the Orkney Islands and visiting St. Magnus Cathedral I had nailed down my focus for graduate school. I'm a senior Anthropology and Art History major in the states. I'll be doing a medieval dig in Poland this upcoming summer too, joy!

Other than Bard Graduate Center can anyone recommend a graduate school that has a multi-disciplined program with Art History and Archeology. There are virtually no medieval archaeology programs in the states from what I can find, but I have had luck in the Art History area.

I have considered University of Buffalo and Hunter College due to them both having Viking archaeologists, however I'd like a longer list if possible.

Thanks everyone!

starting from scratch

I don't have the funds to do it in one trip, but have decided to dutifully chip away at the irritating excess that I don't actually like any more. My wardrobe consists mainly of jeans and graphic t-shirts that are quickly wearing thin, as well as many different versions of black leather jackets. It's annoying to do the laundry and see things I don't really like but am stuck wearing for some self-imposed reason.
So. Slowly but surely, these mundane items will be replaced with practical, yet elegant articles that I truly admire, ensuring I will never again be able to say "but I have nothing to weaaar."

Crashlanding: Steampunk mini-event

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 2:51 PM
Crashlanding: Update. Crashlandings has become the name of my little Mini-event and will probably be the name of future events by Myself or Brute Force Studios. The next Crash' will be on the 12th and 13th of December 2009.
Here is The schedule so far:

Saturday.
9:30 till 12 Noon.
Early Riser and Arrivals will be invited to accompany us to
http://www.antiquemarketplaceoflemoyne.com/
this a a great place with reasonably price object just waiting to be turned into other objects.

12:00 to 1:00
Lunch I will have lunch served here at Grimmelore manor so we do not have to travel and can get right into making stuff.

1:00 till we can not stand it any more.
Workshop: This is going to be slightly more structured then the last one. I would like people to bring either a box (cigar box, jewelry box, etc) or a pair of goggles and we will help you in the modding of these items. We will have some boxes and goggles to purchase at a nominal fee (not our commercially available goggles.. so think bout $10 to $20 at most). Other materials will be here and available for your use.. some free and some of a little money. Don't worry this is not a moneymaking event.. just for fun.:)

Later...
Dinner. Either at the manor or a local Victorian pub or both. We will leave it to our guests to decide.

Sunday:

About 10 or so..
We are going to set up the main lounge of Grimmelore Manor for a photo shoot of both out products and you finery. Be model or have your stuff put on one or more or them models in attendance. Also eel free to bring your cameras. Those who wish may also continue with other projects in the shop.

Notes.
I am having only 12 slots for the workshop and a few have already been filled. The last Crashlanding was completely filled, So please contact me to let me know you are coming. If you find you are not going to come after reserving a slot, please let me know as soon as you know so I can let someone else in.

Accommodations, Some people may be coming from a distance and wish to come for both days. I do have a limited space for accommodation here at the manor, Some of these have already been filled too, so again please contact me to let me know you are coming. If you find you are not going to come after reserving a slot, please let me know as soon as you know so I can let someone else in. If you wish to know about local hotels and such I will be glad to acquire the information and pass it on to you.

This will most likely be my last "Free" workshop as I have been asked to start a series of paid workshops in 2010.

Lastly... The Lord of the Manor. This Mini-event is taking place in my home. Thus I may say yea or nae about who is coming or not. this may be for many reasons so no slights are intended if I let one person in and another is over looked. Also I have never had any problem with any guest and do not expect to have any this time.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at hrathmihre@yahoo.com
I look forward to hearing from you!

Asian Steampunker

I'm pretty new to this whole steampunk thing - still trying to come up with a costume for myself that i can actually well, manage with no money or skills....but in the meantime, i enjoy looking and here are pictures i took from AAC (Another Anime Con) here in Nashua, NH this year. I have not once been to a steampunk event - but steampunk has been advancing on the anime cons as well as the sci fi cons and many more! (in fact, Anime Boston is doing a Mad Science theme for this year!)

CLick on the pic to see the other pictures hosted on flicker.

Hmm... Women Size 8 Specifically

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 9:55 AM

Might be interested in this women's leather military coat at Newport News marked down from $229 to $70 -

They also have an equestrian coat (only marked down from $79-ish to $69-ish but still might be of interest).

Hi everyone,
I've been following this blog for a while now but only just signed up to livejournal. Anyway I've only just discovered steampunk, and I think I'm in love!
And you know how, when you have an interest in something, it then seems to appear all over the place?
Well my favourite gothic come victorian clothing store here in Australia, Gallery Serpentine (these guys are going to make my wedding dress one day!) has released a limited edition steampunk range of corsets worth drooling over.
